30 Million Euro Investment Clears Way for Building Europe’s Biggest Bike Factory

by Noah Simms

February 2, 2020 - (Romania) The Romanian town of Timisoara will become the location for the largest bicycle factory in South-East Europe reports the Wall-Street Journal Romania Insider. Approximately 30 million Euros will be spent by Sport Mechanical Workshop to build a new super-factory, capable of producing 1.5 million bikes a year.

Timisoara bike factory

Announced in late 2019, the new factory will be about five times larger than the current workspace and will produce electric and regular bikes for the chain outdoor store, Decathlon S.A., the largest sporting goods retailer in the world based in French, with over 1,500 stores in 49 countries.

The land purchase has been cleared and construction will break ground in spring 2020, with the factory slated to be finished by the end of the year.

This investment is incredible news for the town of Timisoara after a large, foreign manufacturing plant was closed in January 2019. This new factory will create new jobs for local residents and has the potential for expansion in the coming years.
