Thousands of Cyclists are Hitting Toronto’s Streets During the COVID-19 Pandemic

June 23, 2020 - (Toronto, ON) The City of Toronto’s count topped 34,000 cyclists using closed-to-cars sections of streets on Saturday, May 23 as part of the city’s ActiveTO program. That’s more than the population of towns like Orillia and Stratford.

The data tells one hell of a story. Toronto’s ActiveTO initiative, which closed streets to cars for the weekend, to get people moving during the pandemic while keeping their physical distance, is resonating with residents. Crowds of riders equalling mid-size towns were counted biking along or near the closed cycleways on the weekend.
