August 23, 2020 - With 62% of its residents now commuting to work or school by bike and more than 400km of bike lanes, Copenhagen, is aiming to become the world’s first carbon-neutral capital city by 2025 reports Erik Kirschbaum in the LA Times.
Cycling has been a part of the good life in Copenhagen for decades and its 14-year-plan, launched in 2012, to improve the quality, safety and comfort of cycling is paying dividends. There are reportedly more bikes (675,000) than people, and five times as many bicycles as cars. Nine out of 10 Danes own a bike according to the report.
Global warming presents an existential threat to this Baltic Sea port, which lies just a few feet above sea level, and the Danish capital hopes to lure more riders while lowering carbon emissions to stay ahead of Amsterdam and other cities.
“We’re a biking city, and we want to be the best in the world,” Klaus Mygind, a member of Copenhagen’s City Council in charge of transport policy, told the LA Times – read the full report here.
