eSystems 2021 – FSA eBike System HM 1.0

by Barry Lyster

October 10, 2020 - FSA, which introduced K-Force WE (its first wireless electronic drive train) in 2017, has joined the e-bike drive system market with the release of its FSA System HM 1.0.

Following its presentation at Eurobike 2019, the FSA System went into mass production and is scheduled to be available for frame producers in early fall 2020.

The new FSA System comprises a rear hub electric-assist 250W motor, a 250-watt battery unit, and an integrated on-bike control unit. The compact design and low weight of 3.98kg for the full system ensures a sleek integration with e-road, e-gravel and commuter bikes.

The battery can be integrated inside the downtube with an easily accessible charge port situated above the bottom bracket. For longer rides, an additional 250Wh battery can be carried in the bike’s bottle cage.

With 42Nm of torque, the system is managed by a remote control unit that integrates into the top tube. There are five assistance settings, including an Eco green and Boost red mode. The motor itself features an integrated torque sensor and two speed sensors that can adapt easily to different riding styles and changing conditions.

The FSA System claims superior bearing life and highly resilient waterproofness. Providing assistance of up to 25kph in Europe and 32kph for Canada and the USA, the minimal friction and resistance to the drivetrain allow riders to experience a natural and free-pedalling motion. The rear hub design can fit all bike geometries, including XS-sized bike frames.

The complete system has been developed by FSA in Italy following 18 months of R&D, as well as more than a decade of market research and experience supplying drivetrain components to many e-bike brands such as Bianchi, Focus, Pinarello, Cube, KTM, Fantic, and Scott.

A dedicated app to record ride and usage statistics, display remaining battery life and charge status, as well as full GPS turn-by-turn navigation, is available for both iOS and Android devices. The app also features a diagnostic centre, complete with chatbot interaction and the facility to communicate directly with FSA’s service centres worldwide.

Four accompanying Vision wheels, with more options in development, have been developed to incorporate the new FSA System hub, including the Metron 40 SL Disc, Trimax 30 Disc, Team 30 Disc and AGX gravel-specific wheelsets. For more information visit here and here.
