Winnipeg Grandfather Hopes to Break a 10,000 km Cycling Record for Charity

June 30, 2021 - Arvid Loewen, 65, a Winnipeg grandfather, is attempting to break a cycling world record for the third time, reports CBC. Loewen hopes to bike 10,000 kilometres in the shortest amount of time to raise money for the Mully Children’s Family, a street children’s rescue mission in Kenya.

The legendary local rider has already broken two Guinness World Records for cycling, including one last summer when he set the bar for the farthest distance biked in a single month (11,616 kilometres, according to Guinness).

Currently, Dutch cyclist Guus Moonen, holds the 10,000km record of 22 days, 15 hours, 34 minutes and nine seconds that Loewen hopes to beat despite his recent failed attempt in 2014.

Having raised more than $7 million for the organization via his extreme cycling ventures Loewen received the Order of Manitoba in 2019 for his fundraising efforts.
