Built on the former corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, the 237-mile (386 km) trail stretches across most of the state of Missouri. Over half of the trail’s length follows Lewis and Clark’s path up the Missouri River.

Running between Clinton and Machens with 26 trailheads, the flat and scenic route is ideal for cycling and is also part of the American Discovery Trail. Designated as a Millennium Legacy Trail, in 2008 it was added to the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame.

One of the most beautiful and scenic sections to ride is the 8.8-mile route from Rocheport to McBaine as the trail hugs the base of the 150-foot high Manitou Bluffs along the banks of the Missouri River.

Every June since 2001, Missouri State Parks sponsors the Katy Trail Ride between Clinton and St. Charles, alternating the direction each year. The ride is capped at 350 participants and hasn’t been held since 2018 but hopefully will be back in 2022.

Katy Trail State Park allows Class 1 pedal-powered e-bikes and tricycles with a maximum speed of 20mph. Other electrically powered mobility devices for people with disabilities, such as Segways and electric golf carts, are also welcome.

With camping, swimming, fishing, events and plenty of amenities, the trail offers a healthy and educational slice of rural history with a rich heritage in the region.

You can take a virtual tour of the trail or try the Katy Trail State Park Story Map that informs and inspires.
