US Federal Grants of Nearly $1 Billion RAISE the Bar for Active Transportation

December 27, 2021 - The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently announced an unprecedented investment in projects that advance trail and active transportation infrastructure reports Rails-to-Trails Conservancy.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced nearly $1 billion in RAISE grants this cycle. Projects that were solely or mainly about trails secured 19% of the overall funding, and projects that were predominantly to make roads safer for vulnerable road users like bicyclists and pedestrians secured another 21% of the funding.

This remarkable level of funding via RAISE grants for walking and cycling trails underscores the critical role of active transportation infrastructure to provide safe and equitable walking and biking routes in the USA, and illustrates that making streets safer is critical to US national transportation priorities.
