January 5, 2022 - A “Cycle to Work” campaign in Krakow, a Handshake Future Cycling Capital, saw the completion of fifth round in November 2021. Despite the ever-present restrictions related to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, and consequently many people working from home, more than 140 employers joined the campaign in 2021. As a result, 1700+ employees commuted to work by bicycle during the summer months.
In exchange for choosing to bike, campaign participants received small gifts each month, such as bike accessories, coupons to drug stores and grocery stores, movie tickets, and more. It is worth mentioning that over 27% of campaign participants admitted that the possibility of winning a prize was one of the most important factors motivating them to participate in the campaign. The campaign is very popular among Krakow’s employers, who are already asking about the start of the next edition.
Year after year, the campaign has shown positive results. The latest results of a survey conducted among recent participants (1700+ responses) show that almost every fifth employee (20% of participants!) switched to a bicycle from a car! In addition, more than 50% of campaign participants reported that participating in the campaign has contributed to their increased use of bicycles for general daily travel. A similar number intend to continue bicycle commuting into the winter after the campaign ends, and nearly all are looking forward to the start of the next edition in spring 2022.
The “Cycle to Work” campaign is the subject of a Bikenomics study as part of the Handshake project.
