April 15, 2022 - In June 2021, Vélo Canada Bikes organized Canada’s very first national bike count, which saw over 1,000 volunteers in 68 communities counting 79,735 cyclists. The study targeted 14 pilot communities to get a better understanding of what cycling looks like across the country.
Where possible, volunteers captured demographic data such as age, gender and race to not only see who is riding, but also to discover who isn’t riding. According to the poll, about 70% of the riders are male vs. 25% female, and the majority identify as adults and white. The data will help the organization assist in providing better data for infrastructure to be built in the right places to ensure more people across the country can ride.
