Yamaha Launches New eBike PWseries S2 Drive & Moves Production to EU for Carbon Neutral Goals

release by Yamaha

September 5, 2022 - Developed on the principle that “less is more”, the PWseries S2 drive unit is much lighter and more powerful than the hugely popular PWseries ST launched in 2018. Designed to meet the needs of European e-bike manufacturers, this new system offers a natural and pleasant pedaling experience.

Improved torque-to-weight ratio
Yamaha engineers have worked tirelessly to make the PWseries S2 one of the most powerful and lightest drive units in its class. Producing an instantaneous torque of 75 Nm for a weight of only 2.85 kg, it has a torque/weight ratio that places it among the best in its category.

Building on the proven strengths of the PWseries ST, the new PWseries S2 takes the pedaling experience to the next level and makes this versatile training unit an ideal solution for any type of use: daily commuting, hiking countryside, excursions and mountain bike outings at the weekend.

European production to allow Yamaha to reach its carbon neutral goal faster
In order to accelerate Yamaha’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, Yamaha drive units will be produced in the MBK Industrie factory, 100% owned by the brand and located in France.

Relocating production of the PWseries drive units from Japan to Western Europe not only contributes to Yamaha’s goal of carbon neutrality, but also reduces the cost of transport and reduces logistics times. It offers many other advantages to bicycle manufacturers: significantly reduced lead times, greater flexibility in deliveries, elimination of external disruptions in the supply chain (such as port congestion), optimized packaging for logistics within continental EU and waste reduction.
