eAdventures International – Lake Garda Bike Trail, Italy

October 19, 2022 - The creation of a stunning 140km bike trail around Lake Garda, Italy’s biggest lake, is underway and scheduled to be finished at the earliest by 2026.

This initiative is a collaboration between the regions of metropolitan Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, and the romantic Veneto region.

One of the most spectacular, must-see experiences on the route is a 3km hanging cycle path section launched in July 2018, considered one of the most beautiful paths in Europe.

Located on the north-west side of Lake Garda’s stretched arm, the unique hanging “cycle path of dreams” connects the towns of Limone sul Garda and Capo Reamol, in a spectacular natural setting, where steep cliffs rise from the sparkling blue lake water.

Built using the cantilever approach, whereby the path is anchored into the rocky cliff walls 50 metres above the water, it hangs off the side of the cliff line in such a way to make riders feel as if they’re suspended in mid-air.

Suitable for all levels of cyclists and all types of bicycles, including ebikes up to 25kph, the Lake Garda Bike Trail features wide bridges, night-time lighting and a low gradient. The picturesque fishing villages and rolling hills with cypresses that surround the lake have attracted famous painters and poets throughout the ages.

A great rest stop north of Limone sul Garda is the attractive beach at Spiaggia Sabbioni where you can enjoy the clear, turquoise water and panoramic views. The large and well-maintained green areas, free showers and a playground make it an ideal stop when travelling with kids.

Other attractions include the small town of Malcesine, the pearl of Lake Garda, with its charming cobbled roads, as well as the historic Castle Scaligero in the centre of Sirmione. Take the cable car up to the 1,760m high mountain Monte Baldo, a great destination for mountain bikers.

At the tip of the Sirmione peninsula on the southern shore are the fading remains of a large Roman villa, Grotte di Catullo. Finally, Isola Borghese is Lake Garda’s biggest island with a unique blend of nature and history.

Another great winding cycling path, Strada del Ponale, is located at the northernmost tip of Lake Garda, and takes you through tunnels while offering more spectacular views.

The Lake Garda Bike Trail is also situated beside the EuroVelo 7 (Sun Route) and the EuroVelo 8 (Mediterranean Route), for more fabulous cycling adventures. With files from EuroVelo.
