October 20, 2022 - For 2023, Shimano expands its EP platform along with new features and functions, including the introduction of two new eMTB-specific Deore XT Di2 drivetrains plus the new CUES Di2 for lifestyle e-bike platforms. In addition, the company has partnered with Blubrake for a new Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
The all-new EP600 series drive unit delivers the same natural ride feel and performance of its higher-end EP8 platform but at a mid-level price point. Featuring 85Nm of torque and a continuous rated power of 250 watts, it has a total weight of 3kg and power assist up to 28mph (45kph) for US Class 3-rated e-bikes.
For 2023, the proven EP8 drive unit receives updates and expanded capabilities with the introduction of the latest EP801 version featuring 250 watts, 85Nm of torque, assist up to 28mph (45kph) for US Class 3 e-bikes, and a total weight of 2.7kg.
In collaboration with the all-new EP6 and updated EP801, Shimano is introducing two new e-bike-specific Deore XT Di2 drivetrains to unlock its Free Shift and Auto Shift with Manual Override technologies, for expanded functionality and an enhanced eMTB riding experience.
Free Shift is an all-new shifting mode for eMTB that allows riders to make gear changes without pedalling, as the new XT Di2 system prompts the EP drive unit to simultaneously advance the drivetrain at the chainring.
The new Auto Shift with Manual Override automatically shifts gears for you. Utilizing Shimano’s Linkglide drivetrain technology paired with Di2, the system can make predictive gear changes based on your speed and cadence, inspiring a smooth, uninterrupted ride experience.
In addition, the E6 and EP8 series both include CAN accessory ports, delivering future-proof compatibility. Other features include the all-new Fine Tune Mode on the E-Tube Project app for power profile customization.
Also new for 2023 is the CUES Di2 drivetrain, which brings top-tier shifting technology and long-lasting, smooth shifting Linkglide durability to lifestyle e-bikes.
The new CUES Di2 groupset also includes the new automatic shifting mode, Auto Shift with Manual Override, as well as Free Shift to deliver smooth, fast and decisive shifting, for a continuously comfortable cadence.
Shimano’s new ABS by Blubrake enhances e-bike safety to reduce common causes of accidents by helping riders retain bike stability and stop safely on wet or dry pavement and rough surfaces, all by keeping both wheels on the road and rolling.
A speed sensor on the front wheel monitors wheel rotation and activates the ABS if the wheel slows beyond what is expected for the bike’s speed. When ABS is activated, the system applies modulated braking force on the front wheel, which can reduce the chances of the front wheel locking up and/or prevent the rear wheel from lifting to lower the risk of a rider going over the handlebars.
Compatible with a wide range of Shimano brakes and e-bike styles, the new ABS can be installed on bikes with wheel sizes ranging from 16 to 29 inches.
