Toronto City Council Votes 22-4 to Make Midtown Yonge Complete Street Pilot Permanent

release by The Yonge4All Team

February 8, 2023 - (Toronto, ON) Yesterday, Toronto City Council voted to accept the staff report and the recommendation of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee (IEC) to make the Midtown Yonge Complete Street Pilot permanent. Your support for this project has been incredible and we could not have achieved this result without you.

A big thanks to the more than 8,000 people who signed the petition and the thousands who provided personal comments and sent emails. Sixty-four supporters came to speak at City Hall. And you all had an impact! – read more here.

The Infrastructure and Environment Committee were unanimous in their support of the project and Council voted 22 to 4 in favour of making the pilot permanent. This is incredibly encouraging as we look to extend the Yonge Complete Street north and south.

Thank you for being part of the Yonge4All movement. The Midtown Yonge Complete Street is just the first step. ReImagine Yonge will remake the corridor between Sheppard Ave and Finch Ave with detailed design beginning in 2023 and YongeTOmorrow will bring a complete street on Yonge from College to Queen with implementation planned to begin in 2024.

We hope you will stay with us on this journey as we advocate for a safer for Yonge for everyone – from Steeles Avenue to the Waterfront.

Please take a moment to thank our elected officials who voted to make the pilot permanent with a personal email. They demonstrated great leadership and need to be encouraged to be bold and build more complete streets right across the city.

As per Cycle Toronto, “We are thankful for Mayor Tory, the Infrastructure and Environment Committee, and all the Councillors who voted in favour of making complete streets a permanent part of our public realm. We are grateful for the hard work and support provided by Toronto City Staff, Councillors Jennifer McKelvie, Dianne Saxe, Amber Morley, Josh Matlow, Mike Colle, and Brad Bradford,  without whom these projects wouldn’t have succeeded!

“This also would not have been possible without the dedicated advocacy work of Yonge4All, and the countless other community groups and individuals like our members and supporters. We would like to thank each and every one of you who have contributed to making this happen – this represents years in the making!” read more here.

With gratitude,
The Yonge4All Team
