All Belgian Employees Entitled to Bicycle Allowance for Commuting to Work from May 1

May 2, 2023 - Beginning May 1, all employees in Belgium who cycle to work will be entitled to a bicycle compensation of €0.27 per kilometre, for up to 40km per day, following an agreement between trade unions and employer organisations in the National Labour Council (NLC) reports The Brussels Times.

The new agreement entitles all Belgian employees to a bicycle commuting allowance designed to promote cycling. ©

Thanks to the new agreement sectors from banking and tourism are now included in the plan. Previously about 85% of Belgian employees were entitled to receive the bicycle allowance but now the remaining 15% are also included.

Still a majority of employees, 55%, who live no more than 5 km from their work still choose to commute by car – these measures are aimed at promoting cycling where possible.
