May 31, 2023 - The Guinness World Record for the largest human bicycle was almost broken by Santiago, Chile on May 27 as thousands gathered at O’Higgins Park to support cycling and break Russia’s record set in 2019 with of 2,620 people at Red Square in Moscow reports Athletistic, an independent online sports news platform.
While a number of media outlets indicated that Chile managed to break the world record, in fact that was not the case as only 1,978 people participated. “Unfortunately today it was not possible to exceed the number. But we emphasize the passion…” the World Guinness Records referee said announcing the defeat.
Claudio Orrego, the regional governor of Santiago, announced plans to build a 24 km Alameda-Providencia bike lane project to create “the longest cycle path in the whole country” while proclaiming that, “I won’t be calm as governor until I know that an eight-year-old child and an adult over 80 can ride a bike in Santiago calmly and safely.”
