Opinion: When Cities like Vancouver Applaud the Dismantling of Bike Lanes it’s a Move Backward

(Vancouver, BC) There was strong disapproval back in February when The Vancouver Park Board Commissioners voted to remove the bike lane on Stanley Park Drive. The move signaled that environmental, health and safety concerns, and the opinion of the overwhelming majority of people in Vancouver, are not important to the Board.

Bike lanes are a hot issue as well in Toronto’s current mayoral race, despite widespread proof that protected bike lanes are safer and work, they result in even more business when implemented, and they win votes.

Marsha Lederman’s recent opinion piece in the Globe and Mail checks all of the boxes on why Vancouver’s decision, and mayor Ken Sim’s ABC Vancouver’s congratulatory tweet, are a move backward.
