October 22, 2023 - SRAM has unveiled its new eMTB Eagle Powertrain Drive System, combining its Eagle Transmission and AXS wireless technology to create a “complete, seamless and holistic system designed to turn on uninterrupted flow on your ride.”
Powered by a motor featuring 90Nm torque and 680W of peak output, the system pairs with a compact 630Wh battery that weighs 3kg, or a higher capacity 720Wh battery that tips the scales at 4.1kg. A 250Wh range extender is also available.
The motor is manufactured by Brose, although it was initially thought that SRAM’s acquisition in January of Amprio, an e-bike motor manufacturer based in Germany, would be part of the process.
The new system keeps it simple, offering only two power level options — Range Mode for longer routes, easier terrain or when conserving power, and Rally Mode for shorter rides or whenever you want access the capabilities of full power.
There are two shifting modes as well, “Eagle Powertrain Auto Shift is a feat of German engineering that senses and translates rider input with the Powertrain algorithm to deliver an incredibly intuitive experience. Planning an attack or simply want to override the system? Auto Shift seamlessly accepts rider commands, to be ready for your next move.”
The second mode is Coast Shift which allows the chainring to move freely from the cranks, letting you shift while coasting. According to SRAM, this mode “opens the possibilities of shifting performance anywhere, whether pedaling or not, puts you in total control, even when the terrain ahead isn’t favorable for pedaling.”
The system is controlled and works together via the Eagle Powertrain AXS Bridge Display, “the sophisticated nerve center of the entire system, giving you a control unit that greatly simplifies the experience. Think of it as an onboard extension of the AXS app, providing everything you need to know in a brilliantly illuminated, full color, waterproof display, protected under gorilla glass.”
The Eagle Powertrain AXS app allows you to customize the drive unit power output, check battery life while off the bike, and view and fine-tune a host of features, right from your phone. Plus, it lets you receive system notifications and maintenance reminders. Propain, Nukeproof and Gas Gas are three brands that will be sporting SRAM’s new eMTB Eagle Powertrain Drive System.
