The World’s 280 Million eBikes and Mopeds Cut Demand for Oil Far More than Electric Cars

November 19, 2023 - On the world’s road last year, there were over 280 million e-bikes, electric mopeds, e-scooters, e-motorcycles and electric three-wheelers, cutting demand for oil by a million barrels a day – about 1% of the world’s total oil demand, according to estimates by Bloomberg New Energy Finance reports The Conversation.

This volume far eclipses the over 20 million electric vehicles and 1.3 million commercial EVs such as buses, delivery vans and trucks also on the road last year.

While EVs are much cheaper to operate and maintain annually than petrol cars, such costs plunge for e-bikes and other 2- and 3-wheeled electric vehicles. Plus cars often only have one occupant and the bulk of auto trips are under 10km making the alternatives even more appealing. Read the full article here.
