May 1, 2024 - Austria marked a historic first as more e-bikes were sold than non-electrically powered bicycles in 2023, representing 52% of market share, according to ARGE-Fahrrad. Bicycle sales figures also confirmed the rapidly increasing demand for e-folding bikes (up 105%) and e-cargo bikes which are also booming.
The expansion of cycling infrastructure, incentives, and the promotion of e-mobility are significant drivers of this development reported ARGE Fahrrad’s Hans-Jürgen Schoder, “… e-bikes are the central means of transport for future mobility as they represent an attractive alternative to cars.”
For the third year in a row, bicycle sales in sports and bicycle retailers generated over one billion euros to a total of EUR 1.18 billion, and e-bikes continue to be the main stimulus representing 75% of total sales at EUR 894 million.
