How eBikes Won Over Europe and Now Outsell Traditional Bicycles in Several EU Countries

July 2, 2024 - E-bikes now comprise a majority of bike sales in several European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands and are rapidly gaining share in others such as France and Switzerland reports David Zipper in Bloomberg City Lab.

In virtually all of the countries where e-bikes are a majority of bike sales, governments have offered financial assistance for purchases. The added attraction of an e-bike is that trips become easier and faster, so you can get more done in the time that you have.

Research also shows that people with e-bikes are biking more often, and they’re biking longer distances. Many people who are buying e-bikes in Europe are older, as e-bikes allow them to keep cycling while they age, whereas before the advent of electric bicycles they would have stopped.
