July 25, 2024 - (Toronto, ON) A 24-year-old female cyclist was killed after allegedly being struck by the driver of a dump truck in downtown Toronto on the morning of July 25 reports the Toronto Star.
The incident marks the fifth cycling death this year in Toronto, compared to only one cycling fatality in 2023. More cyclists have died on Toronto’s streets in 2024 than in the three previous years combined according to the city’s Vision Zero dashboard.
The cyclist was travelling westbound on Bloor St. in the bike lane, but was forced into the traffic lane as a dumpster was blocking a section of the bike lane, resulting in collision with the dump truck.
The city is in the midst of safety improvements including a dangerous stretch of Avenue Road, between Davenport Road and Bloor Street, where three cyclists have been killed in the past nine years.
