September 21, 2024 - Spain recently announced a new campaign with an investment of €40 million to help residents and businesses buy e-bikes, in addition to expanding public bicycle systems. The robust plan will see €20 million to help subsidize the purchase of electric bicycles with about €15 million for private citizens and €5 million for businesses to support cycle logistics and the delivery of good in cargo bikes to reduce reliance on vans.
The other €20 million will see the expansion of existing public bicycle share systems, such as BiciMad and Bicing, with the aim of making them more accessible. Some of the funds will go toward rolling out new schemes nationally, while the other half will reduce the pricing structures on existing schemes to make them more affordable.
President Pedro Sánchez made the announcement at the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility claiming, “Our goal is to increase the modal share of bicycles in Spanish cities and getting more citizens to adopt this means of transport in their daily journeys. The bike is not only a progressive symbol, but also a fantastic alternative for mobility.”
