October 27, 2024 - In a statement issued on Oct. 23, the Bloor Annex Business Improvement Area (Bloor Annex BIA) tells Doug Ford to back off their bike lanes as they are having a positive impact, adding that removing any bike lanes in the area would be “disastrous to the neighbourhood”, reports City News and other media outlets.
Ford’s new bike lane legislation, called The Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act would require municipalities to ask the province for permission to install bike lanes that remove traffic lanes.
It would also give the province the power to review existing bike lanes, and in some cases, remove them — a decision that would fall on Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria.
The statement notes that spending increased after bike lanes were installed, that bike lanes reduce congestion, and that the Bloor Annex BIA estimates about 8,000 cyclists per day currently use the Bloor St. bike lanes.
