Ontario Government Under Premier Doug Ford Passes Controversial Bill 212 to Limit Bike Lanes

November 25, 2024 - Controversial Bill 212 passed its third reading by a vote of 66-27 at Queen’s Park on Nov. 25 giving Premier Doug Ford’s Conservative government the power to restrict and remove bike lanes reports CTV and other outlets.

Provincial approval is required before installing bike lanes if a lane of vehicular traffic will be removed and also paves the way for the removal of bike lanes on stretches of Bloor St., Yonge St. and University Ave. without consulting the City of Toronto.

Last minute amendments to the bill prevent cyclists who are injured or killed from suing the government. Cycling advocates claim that Bill 212 is an encroachment on democracy and will make cyclists less safe and will cost lives.
