Doctors Warn Ontario Premier Ford that Ripping Out Bike Lanes Will Lead to More Brutal Injuries

Getting home safely for cyclists just got much harder in Ontario warn 120 doctors from the University of Toronto in an open letter that opposes Premier Doug Ford’s controversial Bill 212, recently passed into law, reports the Globe and Mail.

The bill, the doctors’ letter states, would limit the ability of cities to make their roads safer for their citizens. When a vehicle collides with a person, it typically results in what doctors call blunt trauma.

Doctor Christopher Yarnell explains that blunt trauma can cause catastrophic head injuries, lung failure, fractured bones, injuries to the intestines or internal bleeding. “It is so much easier to prevent road trauma than it is to treat it,” he says.

When it comes to prevention, the research is clear: Bike lanes reduce collisions between vehicles and bicycles.
