Torontonians are Hungry to Bike More but Will the War on Bike Lanes Hamper a Cultural Shift?

December 29, 2024 - Amid the contentious debates around Toronto’s bike lanes, Pete Lilly, owner of Sweet Pete’s, a quaint Bloordale bike shop, is seeing his business diversifying reports the Toronto Star. More families are coming in and buying bikes as cycling becomes a more efficient (and safe) mode of transportation for parents with young children.

Business exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued in the post-pandemic years, but it’s a cultural shift that isn’t yet fully supported by city infrastructure. It could get there soon but the Ontario government is moving to limit the number of bike lanes in the province.

Yet Aaron Enchin, the owner of Curbside Cycle in the Annex, describes the emergence of Toronto’s bike lanes as “fabulous for business” – echoed by the Bloor Annex BIA. Torontonians are hungry to bike more, but will the war on bike lanes hamper a cultural shift?
