Uber eBike Courier Awarded up to $1 Million at Tribunal for Catastrophic Car Accident Injuries

May 20, 2025 - Toronto Uber e-bike courier, Baransel Ortaugurlu, was struck by a car during deliveries on Gerrard Street in Toronto four years ago, and an Ontario adjudicator has ruled that his injuries are so severe that he’s entitled to up to $1 million in health-care support reports TorontoToday.

Formerly independent and sociable, Ortaugurlu now rarely leaves his house to socialize as a result of the accident and suffers from a chronic pain disorder, anxiety, sleep disturbances and flashbacks. A 41-year-old female driver, who failed to yield to the cyclist’s right of way, was charged.

“It is right, it is just and it is life-changing,” said David Shellnutt, the courier’s lawyer, of the adjudicator’s decision at the Licence Appeal Tribunal.
