June 22, 2025 - Following a recent demand by NYC Mayor, Eric Adams, to institute a 15 mph/24kph speed limit on e-bikes citywide amid growing concerns over safety, Lyft, which runs NYC’s Citi Bike public bike share system, has lowered the maximum speed of their e-bikes from 18 mph, reports the Gothamist Daily.

The move followed a scathing letter from Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro that alleged that the e-bikes were harming public safety in the five boroughs. Mastro rejected a plan proposed by Citi Bike to add speedometers leaving it to riders to follow the 15 mph speed limit, noting that there were nine deaths since 2021 on gray e-bikes, and 1,170 injuries on Citi Bike’s e-bikes.
