July 9, 2025 - A court injunction that temporarily prevents Premier Doug Ford’s government from tearing out three major bike lanes in Toronto has been upheld by a Divisional Court panel of judges, while Justice Paul Schabas considers whether their removal would violate the Charter reports the Toronto Star, The Trillium, and other outlets.

The injunction was granted on April 22 by Justice Paul Schabas following a challenge in Dec. by advocacy group, Cycling Toronto, arguing that Ontario’s Bill 212, the Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act passed last November, violated the Charter-protected rights to life and security of the person.
In May, Ontario appealed the injunction after Ford blasted the judge as ideologically motivated, but Justices Faye McWatt, Nancy Backhouse and Richard Lococo of Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice upheld the injunction, as cycling advocates and lawyers celebrated the decision.
