New York City’s 15mph Speed Limit for eBikes to Start in October Says Mayor Eric Adams

September 26, 2025 - New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams is following through with plans to limit the speed of e-bikes to 15mph/24kph in city bike lanes, to go into effect on Oct. 24 reports New York Daily News.

First reported in June, the speed cap was initiated amidst growing concerns over safety. In his most recent statement Adams said “As more New Yorkers turn to e-bikes and e-scooters to get around our city, New Yorkers have asked us to set clear, consistent rules to address this issue and protect everyone.”

Most legal e-bikes are legally limited to a 20mph/32kph (Class 1) but Class 3 bikes that can travel up to 25mph/48kph are also legal on New York City’s streets and bike lanes.

Citi Bike’s rental e-bikes owned by Lyft lowered the top speed of their units from 18mph/11kph to 15mph/24kph back in June in response to threats from the the Adams administration.
