New Study Says B.C.’s eBike Rebates Up Physical Activity 13% and Reduce Travel Costs by 16%

September 27, 2025 - A new study by UBC has found that income-based rebates for e-bikes are helping B.C. residents drive less, cycle more, save money, and generate revenue for the province.

B.C.’s e-bike rebates led to increased physical activity, lower travel costs and reduced auto use ©

Researchers surveyed 1,004 participants in the B.C. Electric Bike Rebate Program that offered rebates of $350 to $1,400 depending on income and found that after one year, rebate recipients increased their e-bike use by an average of 40 kilometres per week and reduced their motor vehicle use by 17 kilometres per week.

Participants most often swapped out a car journey for an e-bike ride, particularly for commuting, errands and shopping. Notably, 87% of participants still had access to a car after their e-bike purchase.

Overall travel costs fell 12%, while physical activity during travel rose 13%, and up to 60% of participants said they would not have bought an e-bike without the rebate.
