September 28, 2025 - In June, Mahle SmartBike Systems unveiled its first mid-drive system, the new M40 full-power drive for the eMTB market.

The M40 weighs only 2.5 kilograms and generates an impressive 105Nm of torque and a peak power of 850 watts. It also offers one of the best power-to-weight ratios, 340W/kg, and delivers a support ratio of up to 400%.
In conjunction with an optimized aluminum shaft, the M40 features a Q-factor of 179mm, and it’s compatible with the ETOR crank standard, ensuring simple integration into a wide range of cranksets.
In addition, the motor is decoupled from the frame via the Mahle Decoupling Mounting System (DMS) to reduce the transmission of vibrations into the frame.

Equipped with the most advanced sensors on the market, the M40 offers maximum responsiveness and includes motor dynamic overrun to assist with overcoming obstacles.
The integrated software uses an ultra-precise speed sensor to ensure a smooth, progressive motor response without jerky movements or abrupt power peaks to deliver a more natural riding experience.
Another great feature is Hill Brake, which prevents rolling back when stopping on steep inclines thanks to the engine’s “Auto Hold” function, allowing for a more controlled, safe start.
The M40 is powered by new, fast-charging and powerful 48V batteries including the 534Wh iM5, which combined with the M40 drive unit weighs close to 5kg, making it one of the lightest on the market. The 800Wh iM8 battery allows for a range up to 150km, or 2,500m altitude.
Bicycle manufacturers can customize and configure the M40 to suit their brand and integrate components via the Mahle Gateway.

New accessories include the Head Unit+, a compact display with a 1.9” colour screen and multiple mounting options. The unit is updatable and can be expanded with future functionalities and improvements.
The new Trio Remote is a wireless, compact and customizable control unit that is easy to use and provides intuitive access to the most important functions and LED status displays while the rider keeps their hands on the handlebars. A second Trio unit can be added with shortcuts to control additional functions.
Current Mahle accessories such as the Duo remote, eShifters and the ANT+ bike computer PulsarOne are fully compatible with the M40 system.
In addition, users can connect to the digital ecosystem of Mahle SmartBike Systems via their e-bike, laptop, smartphone or Apple Watch to access numerous functions.
