NYC DOT Announces Tranzito to Install and Operate 500 Secure Bike Parking Structures

December 2, 2025 - On Dec. 1 New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez identified California-based Tranzito, to install and operate a citywide network of 500 secure bike parking structures.

The selection stems from a request for proposals (RFP) issued in 2024 and is expected to include a five-year contract to operate along with the potential to incorporate e-bike charging in storage facilities.

According to DOT more than 600,000 bicycling trips are taken in the city each day, and this secure bike storage network is critical because many New Yorkers lack in-home bike storage space or cannot carry heavier e-bikes or cargo bikes up-stairs in apartment buildings, a significant barrier to bike ownership.

Streetsblog USA claims that, “other dense cities like London and Jersey City have run laps around the Big Apple when it comes to bike storage.”

NYC DOT will plan storage locations equitably across the five boroughs to help ensure all New Yorkers can experience the benefits of cycling. A variety of small and high-capacity secure parking facility designs will be included in the parking network, including enclosed and open-air units both at the curbside and off-street.

With NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ term up at the end of 2025, the implementation of the project will fall under Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. According to Streetsblog USA, advocates accused Adams and his team of trying to claim credit while punting the actual groundwork to Mamdani.

Back in 2021, Adams had rolled out storage pods by Brooklyn-based Oonee that submitted a 500-page proposal and claims to have been “excluded” from the vendor process.
