March 7, 2026 - Bike infrastructure builds communities strong. It is a low-cost, high-impact solution to the affordability, housing, and health challenges our country is facing today. With municipalities across Canada facing increasingly tight local budgets, federal support can be essential to help complete local cycling networks.

In 2021, the Government of Canada launched our nation’s first National Active Transportation Strategy and the $400 million Active Transportation Fund.
In December 2024, the Active Transportation Fund was included as a dedicated fund within the Targeted Stream of the Canada Public Transit Fund. These milestones were only achieved through years of advocacy, collaboration, and visionary political leadership.
We are now at a critical juncture. In 2024 the government set aside another $500 million for active transportation capital projects and municipalities and First Nations across the country applied for these funds. But the approval and release of these funds, and the continuation of the Active Transportation Fund, is now at risk following the release of Budget 2025.
It might not seem like it right now, but the 2026 construction season is fast approaching. If approvals are not issued immediately, we risk losing an entire year of progress—or worse, seeing these critical funds reallocated elsewhere entirely.
Take Action Now
We are calling on cycling supporters to do three things today:
1. Contact your MP
Reach out to your MP and ask them to urge the Minister of Infrastructure, Gregor Robertson, to approve the active transportation capital fund applications without further delay and to ensure the Active Transportation Fund continues. Please use the following form letter to reach out to your MP and cc ed@velocanadabikes.org so we can keep track of which MPs have been contacted.
We are asking supporters to please send out those messages by Friday March 13th if possible.
• Access the form letter (English)
• Accéder à la lettre type (français)
2. Identify local projects awaiting funding
Identify specific projects in your community that are awaiting the $500M in new capital AT funding. If you can identify a specific project in your community awaiting funding, please let us know about the project and mention the project in your letter to your MP. Referencing a local project helps your MP advocate directly with the Minister’s office.
A quick call to your local councillor or public works department can help you confirm which projects are in the queue.
3. Share
Share this call to action with other cycling supporters across the country and ask them to email their MP. You can pass on this email and share the social media posts linked below.
