eNews – Trek Bicycle Establishes Speed Limits for eMTBs and eBikes

October 18, 2026 - On July 30, Trek established speed-limit standards for its eMTBs and e-bikes to lead with responsibility. All Trek electric mountain bikes sold in the United States will be Class 1, with a maximum pedal-assist speed of 20 mph (32 kph) and no throttle.

In addition, all Trek e-bikes designed for use on pavement and shared paths will limit throttle assistance to 20 mph (32 kph) if equipped, and pedal assistance to 20 mph (32 kph) or 28 mph (45 kph), depending on the model.

More than 17,000 miles of new mountain bike trails were opened to e-bikes across the United States in 2025, reflecting decades of work and relationship-building by advocacy organizations, landowners, volunteers, and local communities. Maintaining that access requires product standards as e-bike technology becomes faster and more powerful.

Trek believes access to shared places to ride, including mountain bike trails, may be at risk because manufacturers are not adhering to responsible limits. Trek noted, “It is an opportunity and a responsibility for the industry to establish thoughtful voluntary standards before access and safety challenges lead to broader restrictions.”
