Advocacy Wins More Funding in Canada for Cycling Infrastructure & Active Transportation

release by Velo Canada Bikes

December 16, 2024 - We have exciting news to share. Our advocacy efforts have paid off! Last week, Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada informed us that more dedicated federal funding for safe cycling infrastructure is secured!

The current Active Transportation Fund will continue within the Targeted stream of the new Canada Public Transit Fund and support the construction of cycling infrastructure across the country. Applications for capital projects are due by Feb 26, 2025.

This advocacy win is the result of years of campaigning by Vélo Canada Bikes and our collaborators. In 2021, our work led to the launch of Canada’s first National Active Transportation Strategy and the $400 million Active Transportation Fund.

The fund was wildly successful and funds were fully allocated long before the planned expiry of the program in 2026. For the past two years we have been working to secure continued federal funding for cycling infrastructure beyond 2026.

Our win last week was the result of dozens of meetings with political leaders and public servants, the submission of evidence-based recommendations to the Federal government, and ongoing support from partners, industry and advocates. But our strong voice for cycling at the national level is only possible thanks to our supporters. There is still much work to do to ensure that the recently announced dedicated active transportation funding continues to receive support from federal leaders from across the political spectrum.

This holiday season, please consider donating to Vélo Canada Bikes to support our work in 2025 and beyond.
