Babboe Recalls 22,000 Cargo Bikes and Offers Replacements Including eBikes & Resumes Sales

April 4, 2024 - Babboe is recalling approximately 22,000 cargo bikes and is offering a replacement unit or an e-bike, as sales resume reports Dutch News and other outlets.

This update follows a halt to all sales ordered by the Dutch product safety board (NVWA) back in February (read more here). At that time four models were recalled, up to 10,000 units, but this has now been extended to cover more of the company’s products and now represents approximately one third of all of their cargo bikes.

The recall process will begin in the Netherlands and Germany in mid-April and other countries will be integrated at a later date. Owners can consult with the retailer where they purchased their unit or visit the Babboe website to determine if they qualify.

More than 6,000 people have reported defects in Babboe cargo bikes to a website set up by a legal firm, Birkway, to handle claims. According to Babboe most of the bikes can be used after an engineer has looked at them and made any necessary repairs.

Product safety watchdog NVWA has joined the public prosecutor in starting a criminal investigation into the company reports RTL Nieuws

“The majority of our customers can get back on the road after an inspection/repair,” said Gerard Feenema, the director of Babboe in a statement. “We expect this to be an annoyance for our customers and have done our best to find a suitable solution and to compensate them.”

Babboe is one of many bicycle brands owned by the Accell Group.
