May 30, 2021 - Berlin launched a cargo bike funding program for companies, self-employed individuals, and associations offering €2,000 for an e-cargo bike, €1,000 for a non-electric cargo bike and €500 for a bicycle trailer.
The city’s direct promotion recognizes that cargo bikes are an innovative means of transport and are an important part of the Berlin’s mobility transition. Cargo bikes are climate-friendly with lower consumption of fossil fuels, space-saving, quiet on city streets, and will improve the quality of life in Berlin.
The funding program began May 10 and applications from private individuals are not available but a rental option at no cost is in place for people who occasionally want to move larger loads by cargo bike.
Around 150 units are available at numerous locations in the city through the German Cycling Association (ADFC – Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club) which has collaborated with different areas to create a “communal fleet” that is steadily growing.
The cargo bike funding supplements Berlin’s “Economic Electromobility” (WELMO) funding program run by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Enterprises.
