June 26, 2021 - Bicycle sales in the UK rose an estimated 22% in 2020, reaching an estimated 3.3 million, up from 2.7 million in 2019 according to the latest research from Mintel.
Mountain bikes remain the most popular type of adult bicycle while e-bike sales rose a whopping 70% during the same period. While they only represent 5% of bicycles purchased in the UK they account for around 23% of all bicycle expenditure.
The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a major change in the UK cycling market as one in four adults (25%) bought a bike in the past 12 months, but the demand triggered has yet to run its course.
“Cycling has been one of the clear winners during the upheaval of the past year,” said John Worthington, Senior Analyst at Mintel. “Consumer engagement will be stimulated by a rising focus on health and wellness. Ongoing improvements in infrastructure such as new bike lanes, pavement-widening, and cycle-only corridors, are helping to make cycling a safer activity.”
