November 30, 2020 - If you are searching for a pair performance sport optics that deliver under virtually any conditions, then check out Bollé’s Lighshifters that tick all of the boxes. And what better place to test them than on B.C.’s Wet Coast in fall conditions.
The Lightshifters feature Bollé’s Phantom lens technology and come with their cycling-dedicated clear green lenses which combine three key technologies including enhanced optical clarity, photochromic enhancement, and high contrast.
Bollé then takes the lens to the next level by adding Polarization to block parasitic light reflections. The use of NXT materials, based on military technology, also offers strong impact resistance, providing protection from car flung rocks, tree branches or a rocky face plant. The result is lightweight, durable, all-condition optic sunglasses with the ability to boost colours and clearly define the pathway ahead.
The NXT Photochromic lenses adapt quickly and efficiently to light conditions by changing from a Cat 1 to Cat 3 in 30 seconds. My test optics would go from almost completely clear while in the canopy of the trees to a complete opposite dark when exposed to the open sun. This amazing technology is almost unnoticeable by the wearer, but highly visible to onlookers or when you take a selfie.
The lenses are vented with Bollé’s P80+ Anti fog treatment to provide clear vision under most conditions. Being able to see clear while climbing gravel trails on a cool, wet day while wearing a Buff was a real bonus.
The Lightshifters wrap your face with curved arms while the soft, flexible Thermogrip angled pieces secure them behind your ears. The lightweight 34-gram optics have an adjustable nosepiece and are made for interchangeable lenses with a choice of lens options available.
I found the smaller fit of the Lightshifters worked well for my head size. The arms nicely slid under my helmet and beanie without creating excessive pressure behind my ear.
They were virtually unnoticeable while out on a ride and held solid in place during more technical gravel descents. I also quite liked the etched frame outline on the bottom of the shield giving these semi rimless optics a full-framed look.
The Bollé Lightshifters passed the test for being that one pair of sport optics able to do most things well, and in today’s Covid era, you can rest assured they won’t fog-up when you are wearing your mask. The SRP is $250-300 depending on your choice of lens.
