March 19, 2024 - A leading government adviser, Nicholas Boys Smith, who chairs the UK government’s Office for Place, says that making urban areas friendlier for walking and cycling, would boost prosperity, health and personal freedom, and could even help solve the country’s housing crisis reports The Guardian.
A new study, titled Move Free, notes evidence from around the world that showed the enormous benefits this would bring in contrast to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s recent “plan for drivers”, which seeks to prioritize car use at the expense of active travel and bus use.
“Don’t wage a war for, or against, motorists. The most prosperous English streets restrict cars as humans are the dominant species, not cars,” says Smith, “Instead fight the battle for place and for happy and healthy, prosperous and productive neighbourhoods.
