New York City Council Approves Micro Distribution Centers for eCargo Bikes

November 25, 2021 - New York City Council overwhelmingly approved many measures on Nov. 23 aiming to curb traffic chaos caused by delivery trucks reports the New York Post.

The City’s Department of Transportation (DOT) is mandated to develop “micro-distribution centers” to transfer parcels from large trucks to smaller transit vehicles such as e-cargo bikes.

According the report the DOT must install five dedicated loading zones per neighborhood, per year, for a total of 1,500 over three years across the five boroughs.

NYC launched a Commercial Cargo Bicycle Pilot in 2019 that has grown to over 350 e-cargo bikes and a 109% increase to 45,000 cargo-bike deliveries.

Revolution X has been managing and operating such hubs in NYC and this announcement will accelerate the growth of this vital last-mile delivery component to reduce emissions and congestion.

Two other pending bills would officially sanction the DOT to use “pay-by-plate” parking tech and clarify loading-zone rules.
