May 29, 2023 - (Copenhagen, DEN) The City of Copenhagen is experiencing an increase in demand for racks for both cargo bikes and for regular e-bikes, and has launched a prototype that will be set up in 28 locations throughout the city.
“The concept of the design is one rack per cargo bike, but the solo rack can in principle also be used for two cargo bikes, depending on the location,” says Tobias Moe Hoffmeyer with the city’s press department.
The new rack has been dubbed the “pq-rack” due to its shape, wrote Oskar Funk on LinkedIN. Funk is a project leader creating safe school routes for children in Copenhagen.
“The elevated curves mean that you can anchor the cargo bike without having the chain lying around on the ground. The height of the bollards and reflexive markings on top, as well as having the curves face inwards, also ensure that people with a visual impairment don’t stumble over it in the darker hours of the day,” says Funk.
The design of the new rack was developed in close collaboration between employees across the Technical and Environmental Administration along with the City Architect. It aligns with Copenhagen Municipality’s standard bike rack making it easier to use in connection with future construction and bicycle parking projects – read more about the design of the pq-rack here.
The new racks will be initially installed at bus stops, as part of a project’s objectives is to improve connective journeys. In the long term, the plan is for the new rack to be rolled out throughout the city.
“If we convert one regular car-parking space, we can make room for 4 cargo-bikes of various sizes, using the pq-rack,” adds Funk.
