City of London Sees 57% Increase in People Cycling as Bikes Outnumber Cars 2-to-1

May 4, 2025 - In the City of London bikes outnumber cars by two to one in the “square mile” financial district during the day reports The Standard as the Transport for London 2025 report indicates a 57% increase in people cycling since 2022.

The Transport for London 2025 report indicates a 57% increase in people cycling since 2022.

The huge rise has been fuelled in part by a 340% increase in the use of Lime and Forest dockless e-bikes that are now widely available across central London in addition to the city’s Santander bike share program.

According to the City Corporation’s official cycle count, which is carried out once every two years at 30 key locations, a total of 139,466 bike journeys were seen on October 9 last year – 57 per cent more than the 88,827 counted in November 2022.

By comparison, the proportion of trips made by car or minicab fell from 27 per cent to 22 per cent. The number of motor vehicles in the City is only about a third of the number seen in 1999.
