July 28, 2024 - (Toronto, ON) Toronto City Councillor Dianne Saxe is calling for criminal charges to be laid following the death of a 24-year-old female cyclist who was struck by the driver of a dump truck in downtown Toronto on the morning of July 25 reports CBC News – read more here.

Saxe, who represents Ward 11, University-Rosedale, where the incident occurred, said that a construction bin was illegally placed in the middle of a bike lane and blocked it, thus forcing the cyclist into the vehicle lane. According to Saxe, both the general contractor and the customer, should charged with criminal negligence causing death.

This marks the fifth cyclist fatality in Toronto this year, making 2024 the deadliest year for cyclists in the city since at least 2020. More cyclists have died on Toronto’s streets in 2024 than in the three previous years combined according to the city’s Vision Zero dashboard.
