Cycling Advocates Call for Boycott of Businesses Suing City of Toronto Over Bloor St. W. Bike Lane

July 6, 2025 - Dozens of cyclists biked down Bloor Street West through the Kingsway neighbourhood on June 5 to protest a lawsuit by over 40 businesses suing the City of Toronto for $10 million in damages over a section of the Bloor Street bike lane which connects the neighbourhood to Bloor West Village reports Toronto Today.

Led by Fridays for Future Toronto, the cycling advocates are calling on Torontonians to boycott all of the businesses suing the city until they decide to drop the lawsuit which claims that the bike lane that was installed in 2023 and 2024 — and has been slated to be removed under provincial Bill 212 — was pushed through by the city despite opposition, causing local businesses to suffer, and “run-away traffic congestion issues.”

But protesters say that data on bike lanes refutes claims they have negatively affected businesses which is supported by Brian Burchell, general manager of the Bloor Annex BIA who said, “Both total consumer spending and the number of customers served by local businesses increased after the Bloor Street bike lane was installed.”
