Cycling & Walking are Hands Down the Most Energy Efficient for Transport and Emissions

September 20, 2022 - Cycling and walking are the hands-down winners in energy efficiency, and hence pollutants, says transport sustainability researcher David Banister, University College, London, UK, who measured different modes in megajoules consumed “per passenger kilometre”, reports Eco Business.

Transport is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions globally according to latest IPCC report – around 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2010 were from the transport sector.

In the real world, how we actually use transport significantly affects sustainability. The discussion thus far has focused on emissions and operations, but it is important to remember that the environmental sustainability of the transport system as a whole is most important.
