December 5, 2020 - This week the city depot for parcel delivery via cargo e-bikes was launched under the name of Depot.Bike for a Pilot operation.
So far, seven logistics companies joined: DHL Express, Dachser, PPL, DPD, GLS, MessengerCZ, and Rohlík.cz (country’s largest online grocery), while four more are aiming to start e-bike based deliveries in January 2021.
The idea of the city’s bicycle depot is based on the need for a rapidly growing volume of delivery of consignments by transport companies during Covid-19 lockdown and the city administration’s efforts to relieve public space, especially in the city centre.
The City Council decided to implement the project in June this year, and the assignment was completed within 3 months. The depot is located is in the very centre of the city, at Florenc subway station in a space which was previously a private parking lot for approximately 30 cars. The entire place is nicely protected by a bridge body against direct weather. The depot also offers heated facilities for couriers, including a kitchenette and showers, a universal charging station for e-bikes and a service station.
The pilot project is planned for 6 months and will be regularly evaluated. There are plans to expand services in spring 2021 with a logistics hub equipped with automatic parcel lockers and pick-up points. Doors will be open for anyone interested in the world of cargo e-bikes. Currently over 10 different types of this vibrant e-bike category can be seen in operation.
If the operation is be deemed a success by logistics companies and the City Hall, the city management has already announced that it will consider introducing restrictions for delivery trucks into the historical centre of Prague.
The organisation of the City Depot is by ekolo.cz – Czech pioneer of light electric mobility. More info and photos are available at www.depot.bike.
