by eBikes International

November 9, 2020 - A government-funded digital technology pilot project in Holland hopes to reduce road deaths by shutting down e-bike motors when riders enter residential or built-up areas of Amsterdam reports The Guardian.

Sixty-five people died last year while riding e-bikes up from from 57 in 2018 and with e-bike use on the rise the not-for-profit Townmaking Institute behind the concept hopes new the speed-cutting tech regulations could be rolled out by 2022.

Standard e-bikes, also called pedelecs, can reach speeds up 25km/h, but faster models, such as speed pedelecs, can reach 45kph.

According to the report discussions over the use of the technology are most advanced with the municipality of Amsterdam, but the provinces of Gelderland and North Holland are also said to have shown interest.
