As a result, the market share of e-bikes in the overall German bicycle market rose to 31.5% and now ZIV claims that a 50% share in the long term can no longer be excluded. According to the report the top three segments are e-trekking at 36%, e-city-urban at 31% and e-MTB at 26.5%.

Sales in euros of bicycles and e-bikes increased to 4.23 billion euros in 2019, an increase of around 34%. The average sale price per bike, including e-bikes, increased 30% across all sales channels over 2018. Together with components and accessories, the total turnover in the German bicycle market is approximately 7 billion euros.

The demand for German bicycle industry products beyond its borders is also on the rise. ZIV reports that the combined export of bicycles and e-bikes increased 15% to 1.45 million units in 2019, while e-bike exports alone rose to 531,000 units, or an increase of 21% over the previous year.

The positive trends in e-bikes is attributed to “…innovations, attractive design and a wide range of models for customers.” In addition sustainable mobility, health and enjoyment are hot topic in German society and politics.
